Name That Food! Mystery food identification flickr group

I have a house to pack and vacate by the end of February, the forum has launched successfully, I have tons of work to do, and I'm also trying to lose weight with the Bento Challenge. Which means...procrastination time! Well not really, but this idea has been brewing in my head for a while so I thought I might as well get it out there. I'm often asked questions of the 'What is this food I saw at an Asian/Japanese grocery store?" nature. Often, without pictures I have not a clue. So...I've made a flickr group called Name That Food. The idea is that you take pictures of food that is a mystery to you, and other people try to identify it. Or you could post pics of food you do know the identity of, and have other people try to guess.

Sound like fun? Go over and join up!

Hah! I love it!

In college, the college club played this game once, and posted a photo of a "mystery" meal to the listserv.

If you guessed the ingredients correctly, you would get a free dinner. It always produced entertaining guesses.

SO fun !! What a great idea. It will be really interesting to see how one food can be totally commonplace to some people and at the same time right out of a science fiction movie to others. And yet another food, just the opposite for both.

Good luck on the packing end of things... in vacating your house, you may find a long lost piece of food in a corner or behind some furniture - it might be a mystery to what that food once was!! :)

...I thought you wanted us to name all the spices in the picture. I got to the end before reading the post.

I'll go join the group now. ;)

I was just wondering if you were still planning to make a nukadoko for nukazuke.. They're my favourite! My grandmother made them a lot when I was little.. my mother took over after her, but she's in Japan! I'd like to try and make one here, in Canada. Thanks!

I won't be making one for the time being - for one thing, winter is not a good time for making a nukadoko since there aren't enough fresh (local) vegetables around (nukado are traditionally 'put to sleep' over the winter). Also I am moving at the end of February, and will be living in temporary housing until we can find a new place, so definitely no complicated cooking stuff for a while.
